Members

All residents of Madison Street between Stuyvesant and Malcolm X Avenues in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn are automatically general members of the block association. That means that you can participate in block association events, come to meetings, have your voice heard, and discuss issues related to the block in person, by email, or on our WhatsApp group. Everyone on the block has a say!

However, if you want to vote on issues (not just discuss them), you need to be a member in good standing, which means paying annual dues:

Each household and business/organization who has paid dues for the year gets one vote per issue. Paying dues is voluntary and allows you to vote.

Board members

Board members are volunteers just like you and do not get paid. What does your money pay for? In 2025 and 2026 we bought the following for our block:

There's lots we can do by volunteering, but in the end we still need some money to buy things for the block. That's where our dues come in. If you can afford to do so, please contribute by paying your annual dues by following the instructions below. Not only will you be contributing to the ongoing improvement of our block, you will have the option to actively guide the block association's actions with your votes.

The board's ears (and phones) are always open to hear your concerns, but voting is how the final decisions get made.

Dues are tax-deductible

Since the block association is registered as a 501(c)(3) charity, your dues are tax-deductible and eligible for matching if you work for a company that offers that perk.
